Indigenous fire to save CO2 emissions
Traditional Aboriginal burning practices in Australia's savannah country could reduce national greenhouse emissions by nearly 5 megatonnes a year and trigger a $52 million-a-year industry, says environmental economist Scott Heckbert of the CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems.

CMKb: a web-based prototype for integrating Australian Aboriginal customary medicinal plant knowledge

The customary medicinal plant knowledge possessed by the Australian Aboriginal people is a significant resource. Published information on it is scattered throughout the literature, in heterogeneous data formats, and is scattered among various Aboriginal communities across Australia, due to a multiplicity of languages. This ancient knowledge is at risk due to loss of biodiversity, cultural impact and the demise of many of its custodians. The authors of this paper have developed the Customary Medicinal Knowledgebase (CMKb), an integrated multidisciplinary resource, to document, conserve and disseminate this knowledge.

Investment in network infrastructure – the energy, water, transport and telecommunication networks – which performs a vital role for the functioning of the economy, can contribute to raising growth and social welfare. This paper identifies the policy framework that promotes investment that is conducive to growth and ensures the appropriate use of infrastructure. Central aspects of this framework are identified as a robust decision making process, improving the selection of investment projects, the introduction of competitive pressures through the reduction of barriers to entry and vertical separation when this is appropriate. In addition, efficient investment can be promoted by the combination of regulator independence and the application of incentive regulation.

Half a ton of municipal waste generated per person in the EU27 in 2007
In the EU27, 522 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2007. In the EU27 in 2007, 42% of treated municipal waste was landfilled, 20% incinerated, 22% recycled and 17% composted.

This issues paper outlines the development of water trading rules advice to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA). The MDBA is responsible for preparing the new strategic plan for the integrated and sustainable management of water resources in the Murray-Darling Basin, which will contain water trading rules. In preparing these rules, the MDBA is required to obtain and have regard to the advice from the ACCC.
