Two-thirds of transportation planners and engineers have yet to begin addressing older people in their street planning; yet by 2025, 64 million people will be over age 65 according to census projections and by 2030 a quarter of all U.S. drivers will be 65+. This is the alarm raised by “Planning Complete Streets for the Aging of America” a major new report on roadway safety and the aging of the American population from AARP’s Public Policy Institute.

Transportation Impact Analysis Gets a Failing Grade When It Comes to Climate Change and Smart Growth [US]

Transportation impact analysis performed to comply with environmental impact laws (i.e., the California Environmental Quality Act or the National Environmental Policy Act) often focuses on how automobile drivers view the world because of general traffic engineering practices and how traffic operations are measured using level of service (LOS). With many communities more concerned about climate change, creating livable communities, and alternative transport, the traditional traffic engineering approach to traffic operations analysis is not effective. Instead of relying on vehicle LOS as the primary performance measure in transportation impact studies, agencies need to consider the tradeoffs between LOS and other important community values and other modes. This paper will present a new paradigm for transportation planning and impact analysis that reflects the inherent tradeoffs associated with vehicle travel, urban development form, and the treatment of other modes.

Motor Vehicle–Related Death Rates — United States, 1999–2005

During 1999–2005, the overall annual motor vehicle related death rate did not change substantially. From1969 to 1992, the overall annual rate of motor vehicle–related deaths in the United States decreased by 43%, to a rate only slightly higher than the rate observed during 1999–2005. Numerous factors have been credited for the decrease in the death rate during 1969–1992. The findings in this report revealed substantial variation in motor vehicle–related death rates among states during 1999–2005.

Road Charges Legislation Repeal and Amendment Bill 2008
The 2007 Heavy Vehicle Charges Determination sets the new registration fees which were unanimously agreed to by transport ministers at the Australian Transport Council meeting in February 2008. All States have now implemented the registration fees with the Northern Territory in the process of doing so and these fees apply to heavy vehicles operating in an intrastate context. ...

This amount includes donations from the non-public sector. Between 2000-01 and 2006-07, total road-related expenditure increased by an average of 8.9 per cent per year in nominal terms. This paper provides details of funding sources and trends.
